Would you say research is always vital when writing a novel? I have a hard time knowing where to look for what I want, so tend to push research aside.

I know Leifer isn't all bad and that if Enna loves him, there must be some good in him...BUT I have a hard time separating him from him with fire. When I see his name I cringe and begin to tense.

Every time I read something where you say a certain character was insistent that they be in the story I have to laugh. My teenage daughter is a budding writer and she always says the same thing! Sometimes she really enjoys writing just to see what the characters end up doing.
