My publisher is offering highly discounted goose girl ebooks through the end of the month. Most everywhere ebooks are sold, you can get it for $1.99. Too good to be true? Just wait! There's more! ...actually, that's it. There's nothing more. But isn't that enough? What do you people want from me? My blood? No? The $1.99 ebook is enough? Oh okay, cool.
I recently read my first ebook and I have to say I'm not a fan. I work on the computer, so when I read a book, I don't want to look at a screen. I like to read in the tub. I like to feel how many pages are left and flip through and make notes. I like to flip back to the cover art. I like the way books smell. I like having books scattered all over the house. I can see the appeal of having a digial library. Books take up a lot of space. But I'm not won over.
Still, I'm going to buy a digital copy of goose girl. Why not? I'm really excited Bloomsbury is doing this promotion. Spread the word! 2 bucks is cheap. That's a slice of pizza! Ooh, now only if the ebook came with a slice of pizza...

I still love my paper copy, but I'm excited to have a copy of Goose Girl that I can carry around all the time! :)

I'll buy one --- unfortunately, I don't have enough space for all my books here at college, so ebooks make sense. In the meantime, my physical copy will be safe back home.

tempting!
but i'm with you. i love my paper books. i feel a connection with them. like i'm holding the character's diary in my hands, able to do with it what i will.
yes, i realize that sounds creepy. and that's where i stop.

Already have The Goose Girl on my Kindle.
Of course.
I was slow to warm up to the idea of ebooks, too. But they have grown on me. For one thing, reading my Kindle is as easy on my eyes as reading a printed book, since the Kindle has no back-lighting and it uses digital ink technology. Also, my kindle does stuff a printed book can't do. For example, it keeps track of where I'm reading (in a whole bunch of books at once), and it tells my cell phone in case I want to read a bit using the Kindle ap while I'm at an appointment.
I still prefer a printed book, but my Kindle props so nicely on my exercise bike, and it is so slim and light, I find myself reading ebooks more and more all the time.

I'm all over that. I have 'Goose Girl the ebook' on hold at the digital library but for two bucks I'm just going to get my own copy!
I agree that nothing beats the feel of a real book in your hand, but for a book-hoarder like me ebooks are a wonderful option.

Forever I will love "old school" books. But I like the idea of e-books. Saving trees and space and being all high tech and stuff... My neighbour is really into e-books... so I will definatly pass this on to her :D

I don't know, I kind of like the look of the Kindle - have you tried reading something with e-ink? Less glare and strain involved.
Posted by: Gillian | March 16, 2011 at 02:09 PM
Ebooks are okay, I guess, but I have The Goose Girl close to memorized. Why would I want to blow $1.99 when I already have a copy in my head?
Posted by: Dassie | March 16, 2011 at 02:24 PM
Nicely said, Shannon! I will never renounce actual books!
Posted by: Elinor | March 16, 2011 at 02:31 PM
Hahahaha....I have no way of buying eBooks, but I would buy the slice of pizza, for sure!
Posted by: Clare | March 16, 2011 at 02:32 PM
I adore paper and ink books, but over the last year I've been traveling a lot and I admit an e-reader would be tempting if I had the funds. Especially if it meant taking one of my favorite books with me for $1.99.
Posted by: JenelC | March 16, 2011 at 02:49 PM
Ebooks are fine. But I'd prefer regular books too.
Posted by: yaks | March 16, 2011 at 03:36 PM
YAAAAAYYY! Oh my gosh, I'm so excited! I like to get, for my favorite books, a copy in paper; a copy on my Kindle; and an audiobook copy. Now I'm 2/3 of the way there! :D :D
Posted by: Keelin | March 16, 2011 at 04:05 PM
Whoo-hoo! I still haven't read Goose Girl and it's been on my to read list for awhile now. Thanks!

i like saving rain forests <3 thanks shannon! this is exciting!

Oh yes, physical books all the way for the ones I really, truly love. But as a fellow nursing mama, I have to say I LOVE the Kindle for being able to read while feeding the baby.

This is awesome! If only it were $1.99 in paperback! I really do not like eReaders all that much either. It's great when a book is right in reach, so you can feel every page. But still, eReaders are very handy.

Paper=bestest, :D

Yay for the shout-out to print books! I'm with you in every way there.
Posted by: ldsjaneite | March 16, 2011 at 07:55 PM
I much prefer print books, they're just so much more... magical C: (in my opinion)
Posted by: Asha | March 16, 2011 at 08:19 PM
That is nice. I still think that printed books rule. I love the smell and feel of them.
Posted by: Alexandra Wood | March 17, 2011 at 07:05 AM
Great price, but I am with you on the actual books. I've never tried reading an ebook and I don't think I ever will. I like having the tangible book in my hands...
Posted by: Laura C | March 17, 2011 at 08:37 AM
Bought it! Thanks for the heads up! :D
Posted by: Laura | March 17, 2011 at 10:38 AM
I'm with you on physical books. But I will tell my siblings: five of them can share books on their Kindles with linked accounts.
I like this quote from my son about ebooks: "Besides, you can't stack em!" (Our house is decorated with stacks of books all over the place besides the baker's dozen of bookshelves.)
Posted by: Sondy | March 17, 2011 at 11:36 AM
Yay, paper! I love paper books, more than anything else. Besides, you can't press flowers or money or four-leaf clovers inside of an e-book...

I love books for every reason you mentioned above. Your books are really great too, my favorite fantasy books. (I'm not a huge fantasy fan but your books have me hooked)
My librarian told me that she had too many copies of The Goose Girl and she was giving away one. She gave it to me. And it has the original cover art! I love it I love it I LOVE IT! I'm in heaven right now! Thank you sooooo much for writing such wonderful stories, if only one day I could do that I'd be really proud.
Posted by: Kelly C. | March 17, 2011 at 04:03 PM
I love promotions like this because then I can have my favorite books on my iPad Kindle app whenever and wherever I want them, as well as on my bookshelf! Thanks for the heads-up.
Posted by: Lillian | March 17, 2011 at 05:13 PM
Well, I feel very strongly about this. I have to say that I love books I can hold in my hand. I like how they look on my bookshelf, and how they smell, and the cover art (like Shannon said). I remember where certain things are in the book based on how close or far they were from the cover. I like that I always have to find my spot (unless I have a cute bookmark) because I get to refresh the story. I also like the fact that I can't take them with me as easily. Books are extra special and I get to hold them and carry them around and know there's a best friend in my backpack/purse/whatever. I feel like I don't have to bend my head down so far, but can snuggle in close with my book as a treat when all my other boring work is done. It's like a play. You go to a play, and the best way to watch it (in my opinion) is live. Sure, the movie version is okay, but real life is so much more exciting. Same with e-books. They're like the movie version. Okay, but not the thing you live and breathe with so much. Although it is a wonderful thing for GG, and the more that book's out there, the better.

I don't know if you know this shannon but I think you rock! I love you!
Posted by: superCa | March 17, 2011 at 05:43 PM
I don't really like ebooks that much, but I still read them. I'm less protective of my kindle than a book, and I can't resist having the possibility of multiple books at my fingertips. Still, if I buy an ebook and love it and don't have an actual copy, I get the real thing. I'm not sure if I'll buy Goose Girl for the kindle... I might love it too much to deal with the loss of physical pages and the right weight and smells.
But even if I don't buy it, thank you for the opportunity!
Posted by: Kim | March 17, 2011 at 06:15 PM
Real books over ebooks of course, but to be able to carry The Goose Girl with me wherever I go? Um, yes please! This makes me really, really happy :)
Posted by: Lindsay | March 17, 2011 at 07:44 PM
Totally with you on the e-book thing. But then, I'm the kind of girl who buys her favorite books hardback because hardback seems so much better than paperback.
Posted by: Liz | March 17, 2011 at 07:50 PM
Yay for you going (affordably) digital. I think its ridiculous that ebooks are usually $14. Thanks for the message.
Posted by: Je Reve | March 17, 2011 at 07:53 PM
Yay, just got it!

My sister told me she was thinking of buying a kindle for her college textbooks because of the cheaper prices of the electronic versions and the crushing weight of the paper versions. All I could think, though, was: "I use spatial relationships for recall aids. When taking a test, I tend to visualize the page on which I read the information, and the relative position of that information on the page. Can't do that with a kindle!"

Hmmm...that pizza might be a selling point for a lot of people. :)
I love the smell of books and the weight in my hands when I'm reading a book, so I'm not quite ready to switch (even partially) to an e-reader just yet. There will come a time when I'm sure it will be practical for me though...
Posted by: Rae | March 18, 2011 at 06:44 PM
I already have hard back (signed), paperback for loaning out, audio, so, what the heck. I bought the ebook tonight. :-)

Real books are great, but I just moved to South Korea and all my real books are still making their way here by boat. They said that it would take about 75 days. That's 2 1/2 months. Good thing that I had a Nook (Barnes & Noble eReader) because I "carried" over 200 books with me on the plane. With the weight restrictions that's not something that you could do with paperbacks.

I'm not an ebook fan myself. cause I don't have that technical device. I love reading paper or hard cover books. I still have not read Goose Girl yet, but it sounds good to read so when I have the money I'll go buy it some day. Or perhaps or check it out at the Lybrary. yea I'll do that :)
I love Princess Acadamy though. My favorite! :)

We were given a Kindle for Christmas, and I used it only reluctantly. I can't picture my bookshelves lined with Kindles. Or one Kindle.
HOWEVER--
I LOVE me my Kindle. I love it so much I went and bought "Goose Girl" for Kindle. I can take 20 books with me everywhere I go now. 100 books. 1,000. I read when I'm waiting for kids at Soccer practice, read in the Chiropractor's waiting room, read during intermission, read on airplanes . . . It's wonderful.
BUT--
I love me my books too. Which is why I have 9 shelves of them in my home. Love the look, weight, smell, and hand full of adventure when I hold them.
I hope books and Kindles learn to get along, and bookstores stay around forever.
Thanks for writing wonderful things, Mrs. Hale. I'm anxious for more from you because I know I can trust it.

(BTW, I have no idea of 1,000 books is possible on an eReader. But 100 or 200 will do.)

I will always cherish real books the most...but if by some slim chance my mother allows me to get an eBook, the Bayern series are DEFINITELY first :D I admire your work! Exceedingly! A lot! Bunches! Au revoir, and good day to you!

what can I say . . . I'm totally converted to my kindle. I recently suffered from a serious bout of Bell's Palsy that left me with a partial paralysis in the muscles of the left side of my face. It also affects my eye, which tires easily. I would have had to give up much of the reading I do because of the fatigue reading from paper causes. But for some reason reading from the kindle does not cause eye strain. For me having a kindle is a blessing. I have all of the Bayern series and the Princess Academy on my kindle. I loved them all. I hope to read many more of your books.
