I did it. I met Lauren Myracle's Scare-a-Thon challenge. Allowing my horrifically creepy husband to scare me in a dark house seemed the best way to reach the highest "scare" quotient.
- Scream along with me as I stumble through a dark house with no idea what to do!
- Watch with fascination my amazing cinematographic skill as I feature my mouth and nose!
- See the jumps as we edit awkwardly to cover up my terrified ineptitude!
Yes, that last point is particularly noteworthy. Right at the climax when I was at my most petrified, I hit Stop Record, as if I could turn off what was happening. I was amazed watching the video after to hear my breathing--I actually had rapid, labored breathing induced soley by fear. I was shaking for a good hour after. So curl up in a well-lit, safe, cozy room and enjoy. (And thanks, Shawn, for naming our incident!)
EDIT: If you can't load the embedded video, you can view it on youtube.

omg, that looks really freaky! who was on the floor?

Way to go Shannon! You're very brave!
I knew it couldn't be TOO scary, but I'm rather pathetic, so I had my eyes half-covered the whole time I was watching that. :D But I very much enjoyed it. Heehee.
Posted by: Katee | October 31, 2008 at 08:30 PM
I love you Shannon.
I thought I would just giggle through the whole thing, because that's what I tend to do when I'm trying not to be scared, but you really had me going! That was terrifying! Poor soul. I'm very glad you survived. I wouldn't have. You should totally make a horror movie.
And you're right. The meat is so like Dean.

Was it horrible of me to be laughing? I'm sorry because I seriously would have been freaked out too...I don't like horror movies at all (my younger brother is trying to convince me to watch 1408 because he swears it's not scary but I read the summary on Wikipedia and I'd have to disagree with him) and I *hate* the dark.
Congrats on facing your fears!
Posted by: Anidori-Isilee | October 31, 2008 at 09:07 PM
Eep! I can't believe you did it - I probably wouldn't have made it past the chunks of meat...
But I still loved the clips; what a Halloween. :)
Posted by: Rebecca Joy | October 31, 2008 at 09:39 PM
You're braver than I am. I don't think I would have made it past the front door. I was definitely squinting the whole time while watching(because if things are blurry, they obviously can't hurt me). Kudos.
Posted by: Meredith | October 31, 2008 at 09:53 PM
Holy crap, Shannon. My heart is racing--even though I knew it was all safeness and light (at the end of the tunnel, anyway!).
Brava!!!!
And, Dean? Yer kinda freaky, Mr. Meat Man... ;)

AAAACKKK!

Did you ever know that you're my hero?
And everything I wish I could be? :)
Posted by: Dr. Sallie N. Cheinsteen | November 01, 2008 at 09:19 AM
That is amazing. You were so scared, I was scared! I refuse to watch scary movies or go in haunted houses and stuff (I used to be scared of Signs!), but that was totally hardcore brave. :D
Posted by: Christen | November 01, 2008 at 09:40 AM
That was so awesome. I laughed so hard when you locked the door. Bravo Shannon!
Posted by: Lessie B. | November 01, 2008 at 10:20 AM
The highlight of my halloween.
Posted by: Kyle | November 01, 2008 at 10:48 AM
Waaah! It says "This video no longer available." I weep. I wanted to see it! Holy moly, even I'm not crazy enough to let Dean scare me in a dark house.
"That's the sound we hear before we die..."
Just sayin'.
Kiss, kiss. LB

Oh my gosh, I'm so proud of you! You can't even believe how brave I think you are. You are amazing Shannon. I can definitely say that you are one of my heroes, in so many ways. Go Shannon and Dean!
Posted by: Heather Z. | November 01, 2008 at 12:50 PM
Meat?
Wow, that was fun. And scary. Mostly scary.
Posted by: hwalk | November 01, 2008 at 12:56 PM
Wow - my husband teases me because I won't walk through the house without lights on. He would TOTALLY love to scare me like this. I would die! And I'm with you on the scary movies. I can't do them either.
Posted by: Megan | November 01, 2008 at 12:57 PM
That was magnificent! Many thanks to you and Dean for a Dean Witch Project beyond anyone's wildest dreams. Nightmares. Something like that.
So, Shannon, does this qualify as a "happy" Halloween? :)
Posted by: Shawn | November 01, 2008 at 01:35 PM
You have GUTS. I seriously don't think I could do that.
Posted by: Miss Erin | November 01, 2008 at 01:37 PM
AWESOME.
I would not have been brave enough to do that.
I mean: Dean, in the dark, with meat. Ah! Seriously. I'm a big chicken.
Posted by: Enna Isilee | November 01, 2008 at 07:24 PM
aw, pobrecita shannon! i would kill someone who did that to me. man, lauren myracle is too, too evil...
Posted by: Audrey-sensei | November 01, 2008 at 07:53 PM

-Lizzy-wa OUT! :)
Posted by: Lizzy-wa | November 01, 2008 at 08:09 PM
That was awesome, and just made me miss old Dean-o. *sigh* And the meat, of course. The obsession with meat. Those notes were a scream.
Posted by: Carson | November 01, 2008 at 08:28 PM
That was amazing. And like many others I laughed while watching it! Too funny!
Posted by: Danielle | November 01, 2008 at 08:56 PM
then video doesn't work for me either... it says "no longer available"
Posted by: clairedelune | November 01, 2008 at 10:01 PM
I laughed SO hard when I saw that decrepit handwriting and the saw. Then there was MEAT. OH. MY. HECK. SOOOOOO hilarious! I lost it then. It was all terrifyingly funny from that point on. You locking that door, the sound of your rapid breathing, then what the crap was with the person on the ground? So crazy!
The very best part? "I still have meat in my hands." All the way.
Posted by: Katie-wa | November 01, 2008 at 10:13 PM
ah hah hah! That was brilliant! "What's this? The garage? ...I'm going to lock that." So far definitely the best!
Posted by: Megan | November 02, 2008 at 05:45 AM
You're a good sport. I would've chickened out upon seeing the meat.
Posted by: Rabia | November 02, 2008 at 07:44 AM
Shannon, you are very, very brave.
Go you!
:)
Posted by: the dragonfly | November 02, 2008 at 12:04 PM
Poor Shannon!
Those messages were creepy!
Who was that guy on the floor? I thought it was Dean, but then he jumped out and scared me.
Posted by: Maribeth | November 03, 2008 at 06:31 AM
Actually? That right there just says so much about Shannon and Dean's marriage. It's, like, a wonderfully concise and lovingly representative encapsulation of who they are together.
Completely, absolutely sweet and a just a little bit horrifying.
Hall of fame material. I laughed, I cried, it became a part of me. Better than cats.
Posted by: Marcus Aurelius | November 03, 2008 at 09:17 AM
Or, y'know, "Cats".
I still stand by my original statement.
Posted by: Marcus Aurelius | November 03, 2008 at 09:19 AM
I was laughing as I watched that. But I can also totally relate--I'd be freaked out. :D
Posted by: Merissa | November 03, 2008 at 09:31 AM
*SCREAM OF TERROR*
The BLOOD!
The UNIDENTABLE HANDWRITING!
The RANDOM PERSON ON THE GROUND!
The DARKNESS!
The LOCKING DOORS!
The MEAT!
THE HORROR!!!
WOWZA!!! That was way scarier then I though it would be! You are TOTALLY AWESOME!!!
Posted by: The Abbinator | November 03, 2008 at 03:09 PM
Thumbs up, Shannon! I would have been crying with fear by the end. Awesome.
Posted by: Zayas | November 03, 2008 at 05:00 PM
Oh wow that was funny! I loved the meat. I actually did kind of jump a few times :D
Posted by: Faith | November 03, 2008 at 05:28 PM
It looks like you and Ms. Myracle are the only ones to post on youtube.
I liked yours tremendously. I hope the other authors still plan on putting up.
They are easy to find if you punch in scare a thon in the youtube search and then limit the time search to 1 week, or now 1 month.
Posted by: Deb Lamborn | November 04, 2008 at 01:22 PM
Way to go, that was very brave of you!
Awesome!
Posted by: Jena | November 05, 2008 at 10:38 AM
WOW! I know it's been said before...but I'll say it again...YOU'RE BRAVE!!! I don't think I would have been able to do that! Yikes I was shaking too, but it was really fun to watch at the same time :D
Posted by: Hoho | November 06, 2008 at 10:10 AM
Oh, my gosh, that is too funny. "I still have meat in my hand!"
Posted by: Julie | November 08, 2008 at 09:46 AM
The scariest thing I ever heard of a husband freaking out his wife was of a guy who hid in the backseat of his wife's car late one night. When she got in, he grabbed her from behind. If that had been me, I think I might have killed him.
Glad you survived the ordeal. :)
Posted by: Michelle Witte | November 09, 2008 at 07:30 PM
Hahahhah!
I was pretty freaked out through the whole thing - I'm such a wuss I wanted my fiance to come back from Afghanistan and hold my hand through it! But overall, the funniest part to me was the fact that at the beginning you said "The Meat is so like Dean" and then at the end he seemed so disappointed to think that you hadn't seen the meat upstairs... "Look, I have meat in my hand!" I was cracking up by that point.
I don't think I could ever do something like that, especially considering the diabolical nature of my fiance. Heh.
