I got an email that austenland would be featured in Glamour magazine in August. In a section called "Reviews you can use: 8 things you'll love this month," they have a cover shot of austenland and a brief and lovely review. This is a magazine I never, ever imagined to find my name in. Cool, I wanted to scream. That is so freakin' cool!
When I read the email, I was wearing capri sweat pants and a t-shirt splattered with baby food. I hadn't left the house in two days, partly because on Monday I had a pre-cancer spot removed from above my lip and am sporting a band-aid that resembles a faux-Hitler moustache. (So I also hadn't done my hair or put on any make-up -- really, what's the point when you have band-aid in mustache position?) Because of the surgery, my upper lip was swollen to three times its normal size and seemed more beak than mouth. I had eaten 2 (two) chocolate cake donuts and spent much of my time cleaning up various child-related messes from the carpet.
That's me. 100% Glamour.

Such cool news, Shannon!
I'm just shocked they're not putting you on the cover:
"Thigh-trimming tips from the author of the 'must read' book of the summer."
You rock.

That's really funny. And ironic. I wouldn't expect it to be in Glamour magazine, either.
I haven't done anything useful in days and I'm still in my pajamas. And let's see it's...hmm...like nearing 5:00 pm. You gotta love summer.

Shannon, you've got more Glamour and Sass than the rest of those women in that magazine combined. "Freakin' cool" basically just sums it up.

Hurrah!

I much prefer the "Mommy Glamour" to the "Movie Star Glamour" any day.

That's awesome Shannon! Congrats!
Oh! I was on a Harry Potter site (mugglenet--see the URL above)and I was just doing my own thing when I clicked onto The Book Trolley. This is where the actor, Robbie Fischer, or AKA: Hagrid, puts his favorite books on.
And of course, YOUR BOOKS WHERE THEIR!
He has down Goose Girl and Enna Burning. Shannon that is amazing! You're amazing and so are your books. ~Sam

:D Cool. The mustache band-aid made me chuckle. Anyways, I sure you become the band-aid. ;)

Really? Cool. Do u live on the Gold Coast? My grandma is flying up to Queensland tomorrow. I wish that I was too! Is it warm up there because it's about 7 degrees down in Tassie at the mo! Today it pelted down in the afternoon and everyone got soaked walking home from school, (including me I might add!)
Posted by: Sylvia | July 13, 2007 at 12:48 AM
sylvia- I DO LIVE ON THE GOLD COAST! It is kinda cold at the moment for the Gold Coast but it is beautiful weather. Wow! Seven degrees, that would be really cold in the rain. Tell your Grandma that I said hi.
Posted by: australiangirl | July 13, 2007 at 01:59 AM
Band-aids = the sign of the true mother = awesome and praiseworthy.
For a second I was thinking, "Hey, you couldn't have rain in seven degree weather!" And then I remembered that Australia uses centigrade. Hehe ^_^'
Happy Friday the Thirteenth!

Pre-Cancer? Does that only sound scary to me?
But so cool! Glamour doesn't necessarily mean beauty you know. There are a lot of glamorous people that lead perfectly normal and hectic lives.
Like... like... like... Well Shannon Hale for instance. ;)
Also B1000 was amazing. That's it.
If I say anything more I'll type for hours.

What a great story!
Posted by: Rose | July 13, 2007 at 01:16 PM
This post gave me a good little chuckle.
Also makes me wonder how common pre-cancer spots above the lip are. My mom had one removed a year or so ago.
Glad they caught it for you.
Posted by: summershine | July 13, 2007 at 02:23 PM
I'm glad the spot was removed before anything really bad happened! And congrats about the "glamorous" Austenland. I'm just all smiles right now!

Ah cancer...one of the greatest heartbreakers in the world.
Don't feel bad, Shannon. My mom brother and I did some planting today. It was fun, but I haven't been so dirty in a long time.
Posted by: Jaya Lakshmi | July 13, 2007 at 04:16 PM
Oh Shannon, you make me laugh. You are my absolute role model, and I wish that I could be half of what you are. Great sense of humor. By the way, have you seen what Stephenie Meyer wrote about you on her website? She thinks you're great too.
Posted by: Kate | July 13, 2007 at 08:22 PM
You are 100% glamour, Shannon.
Posted by: Lauren A. | July 14, 2007 at 07:32 AM
I adore all your books, Shannon, but Austenland is definitely my favorite! You go glamour queen!!!!!!!!!
P.S In addition to loving your books, I also love your taste in donuts! Power to chocolate lovers everywhere!!
Posted by: libby | July 14, 2007 at 02:36 PM
As far as I know, skin cancer is not a serious problem if kept under control (like removing pre-cancer spots).
Posted by: Q | July 14, 2007 at 06:27 PM
Pre-cancer? I hope you're okay. I had some spots removed, and I freaked out until the results came back.
Posted by: Sophie12 | July 15, 2007 at 06:12 AM
Way to go! I took Austenland on vacation last week, and LOVED it. It was the perfect time for me to read it. I often read while sitting in my Paraguayan hammock right by the side of a river. (We took our kids camping in the Smoky Mountains--gorgeous!)
As a side note, did the pre-cancer spot come from too many days in the sun in Paraguay? In all of my pictures from my days down there, I have a sunburned nose. :-(

Hey-ho! Just thought I'd quickly mention that yesterday was the one-year aniversary of me meeting Shannon and beginging "The Goose Girl" Funny how a complete accident has turned into total obsession.
Muahaha!

I know this is kind of about the last blog entry... but, what other books have you blurbed, Shannon?
Posted by: Calliope1of9 | July 15, 2007 at 01:16 PM
OOh, I'd like to know that too!
Posted by: Enna Isilee | July 15, 2007 at 02:31 PM
You are the perfect ideal of glamour, Shannon.
Posted by: hwalk | July 16, 2007 at 08:16 AM
Shannon you have a great sense of humor. The band-aid thing is funny.
Congratulations on the Glamour magazine thing!!You deserve it. The book deserves it.

Beauty is worth nothing. Look at the tabloids. There are enough physically beautiful people, yet not nearly enough who have that in conjunction with intelligence. It matters more your wit or sense of morals.
I have a feeling I've given this spiel before.
Posted by: Dante | July 16, 2007 at 10:56 AM
Congratulations! Why is it that movies and television shows never show people at home wearing stained sweatshirts, torn jeans, and no makeup? It's unnatural.
Posted by: Caryn | July 16, 2007 at 01:03 PM
Dante-Several times. Are you into the Divine Comedy or is Dante just sort of random?
